Retrofitting a floor heating system in an existing structure
Whether historically protected churches or apartment buildings from the 1960s: Schlüter-BEKOTEC-THERM has brought existing structures and their spaces into the modern energy age in countless restoration and renovation projects. With its low assembly height and the associated reduced static stresses on the floor, it is ideally suited for floor heating systems in retrofitting projects for existing structures.
Slim and lightweight – the ideal floor heating system for restoration in existing structures
Because the heated screed of BEKOTEC-THERM systems is particularly thin, the resulting assembly is extraordinarily lightweight and slim. That is especially relevant for renovation projects in existing homes, where every millimetre counts in
floor assemblies. However, the low assembly height is also an advantage in new construction because it opens up additional space for impact sound insulation.
In comparison, conventional floor heating systems have a screed cover of at least 45 mm above the heating pipes. This results in a screed weight exceeding 130 kg per square metre. Thanks to its thin floor assembly, the Schlüter-BEKOTEC system only requires a screed cover of 8 mm above the studs. The lean results: savings over 50 percent per square metre in screed weight!
Insulation. Heating. Screed.
Schlüter-BEKOTEC-EN 18 FTS is a studded panel with integrated impact sound insulation (tested for 25 dB) with a thickness of just 23 mm. This combination can be directly installed over weight-bearing substrates, such as concrete or wooden sub-floors. Both the heating pipes and the screed are then installed on the panel.
A strong lightweight!
Together with the necessary screed coverage of 8 mm, Schlüter-BEKOTEC-EN 18 FTS has a total assembly height of just 31 mm and a minimal weight at 52 kg/m². This results in a sturdy, yet lightweight solution that will delight you as a designer, including in terms of your project's static properties. Life can be so simple...

The "thin to the max" solution
Schlüter-BEKOTEC-EN 12 FK is a thin-layer studded panel with a thickness of just 12 mm. The cut back studs of BEKOTEC-EN-12 FK provide secure attachment for heating pipes with a diameter of 10 mm.
Together with the screed, which only has to cover the studded system by 8 mm, Schlüter-BEKOTEC-EN 12 FK features a sensationally low 20 mm assembly height and a weight of just 40 kg/m².
No milling required!
Die Schlüter-BEKOTEC-EN 12 FK floor heating system is a perfect fit for all renovation or restoration projects. Thanks to Schlüter-BEKOTEC-EN 12 FK, restricted static requirements or limited assembly heights no longer are a reason to forego an efficient floor heating system. This studded panel system also does not require time-consuming milling - shorter construction times, less effort!
Slim and powerful!
An impressive performance. Don't be deceived by the low assembly heights of our covering assemblies: they are as durable as conventional screed floors and can support exceedingly high traffic loads. Schlüter-BEKOTEC is installed in numerous car dealerships. Does the fact that our system is able to support a 3.5 ton SUV help you relax about your project?
When it comes to redesigning individual rooms, such as bathrooms, homeowners frequently have to decide between floor heating systems and radiators. Even if the project is fitted with conventional radiators, the Schlüter®-BEKOTEC-THERM system offers the option of retrofitting individual rooms with a new heating system as part of renovation. The resulting heating system not only saves energy, but also creates additional space.
Architects and homeowners decide whether to install a modern heating system retroactively throughout the space as part of a restoration project or whether to upgrade individual rooms by installing a radiant panel heating system. Additional Schlüter®-DITRA mats can easily be installed for waterproofing the floor area.

Barrier free model bathroom by Schlüter
The German Society for Gerontological Technology (GGT) offers comprehensive services for concerns associated with '50 plus living' to specialists from the industry, retailers, craftsmen and to consumers. In its permanent exhibition "Forum for Generations" in Iserlohn, Germany, the GGT displays numerous offers for barrier free construction and living.
This exhibition features a barrier free bathroom, which is equipped with the products and solutions of Schlüter-Systems. In addition to a floor level shower built with Schlüter-KERDI-LINE, the splash guard profile Schlüter-SHOWERPROFILE-WS and the Schlüter-DECO-SG profile for attaching the shower wall, the display also includes a Schlüter-KERDI-DRAIN system for central point drainage.
Further comfort in the bathroom comes from the floor tiles, which can be quickly brought to temperature. That's why the GGT model bathroom features our thin-layer, energy-efficient floor heating system Schlüter-BEKOTEC-THERM. The electric floor heating system Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-E is also installed in a tiled bench.
The vanity and the mirror above are elegantly highlighted by the innovative Schlüter-LIPROTEC illuminated profile technology. As a special treat for visitors, a Schlüter-KERDI-LINE drainage channel has been installed in the sink.
All tiles in the bathroom were installed over the underlayment Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD. The tiles on display were supplied by Agrob Buchtal.
Warm wall and floor tiles in a renovated bathroom
The electric radiant panel heating system Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-E is a perfect solution for retrofitting in existing structures. It can be installed to complement existing heating systems and creates pleasantly warm tiled areas in front of the sink or in the shower as a powerful radiant panel heating system. The thin-set heating system is sold as a complete set including waterproofing and features an impressively low assembly height of just 5.5 mm.
